Hanalei Valley is a patchwork of neat taro farms bisected by the wide Hanalei River.

Many taro farmers lease land within the 900-acre Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge, helping to provide wetland habitat for four species of endangered Hawaiian water birds.

But it's there. I'm pointing at it.

We decided to hike a bit of the Kalalau Trail. Here is a pic of our first steps -- straight uphill over this path of boulders.

Once up a few hundred feet or so, we were able to look back at our starting point, Ke'e Beach.
